Ruins of the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant

The Kingsbury Ordinance Plant (KOP) is located in what is now known as Kingsbury, Indiana. It started producing shells, cartridges and mortar rounds in 1941 for use in the European and Pacific theaters of World War II. More than 13,000 acres were set aside for the facillity. By May 1942, there were more than 20,000 employees working at the site. The small towns of Kingsbury and Kingsford Heights were created to house KOP workers. After the war ended in August 1945, the plant began closing but it was briefly reopened in 1951 due to the Korean War.

The photos on the following pages were taken in 2000. After a few pictures of the bunkers in the north-west, the photos focus largely on the abandoned ammunition factories in the south-east (noted in the satellite photo above).
