In A.D. 1521, Ponce de León landed in Florida and founded a colony that was quickly overrun. Later in 1565, admiral Don Pedro Menéndez founded St. Augustine (this was forty-two years before the founding of Jamestown, Virginia). Though it has changed hands many times, St. Augustine remains the oldest permanent European settlement in North America. Orlando, formerly Jernigan, is a much younger settlement that was founded in 1838 by the U.S. army.
This map uses many older place names that no longer appear on contemporary maps. These older names had a variety of spellings—standard systems for Native American–English transcription simply did not exist when the first maps of Florida were drawn up. For example, Lake Mayaco (modern day Lake Okeechobee) can be found on older maps as Mayaco, Majaco and Macaco.
This map was commissioned for a magazine ad promoting the 2004 Pokémon CCG World Championships. The tournament was held in Orlando, Florida (marked above with an “X”). Several labels on the map above were omitted from the published advertisement.
