Hokkaido is the northern-most prefecture of Japan. All of the kanji characters and place names you see here are accurate. Although made to look old, this map can not be considered a historical replica; it is drawn in a contemporary style and Hokkaido was never really part of pre-modern Japan. The details were inspired by old Japanese maps, where cities and villages are represented by boxes or rounded rectangles and shrines are represented by torii gates or pagodas. The small figures around the shrine gates are Japanese stone lamps.
This was my first color map. There isn’t much location detail here so, as a resource, it is pretty limited but I made it to experiment with a new look. I eventually used a similar style on maps for Dragon Magazine and Games Workshop.
