Trojan War/Troy map
Trojan War Map

This map depicts the world of Homer’s Iliad. The overview of ancient Greece and Asia Minor is pretty straight forward but the island Dulichium posed a problem. I needed to include it on this map but the actual location of Dulichium isn’t rightly known. Homer writes that it is near Ithaca so I added a fictitious island next to Ithaca and named it Dulichium. The border around the edge is called a Greek key pattern or Greek fret.

This map was created for Trojan War by Green Ronin Publishing and appears in the printed book as a gray scale halftone.

City of Troy

The inset is a speculative reconstruction of Homeric Troy. The archeological layer corresponding with Priam’s city is somewhat debated—either layer VI or VII. The layout I chose to use on this map is closer to Troy VI. The inset’s labels are supported with archeological evidence but the path of the north wall, some of the streets, and most of the buildings are products of creative license.

Only two of Troy’s gates have proper names that I’m aware of—the Scaean Gate and the Dardanian Gate. I have added an additional proper name by changing the western gate to the “Hesperian Gate.” Hesperian, as it is used here, simply means western.
